Description

Celotex PL4000 Insulated Plasterboard is a versatile solution combining PIR insulation with a 12.5mm tapered-edge plasterboard layer, ideal for enhancing thermal efficiency in both roof and internal wall applications. With thicknesses ranging from 37.5mm to 77.5mm, it offers excellent thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, helping to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings.

PL4000 simplifies installation using traditional mechanical fixings or the convenient dot-and-dab method, eliminating the need for separate insulation and plasterboard. The built-in Vapour Control Layer (VLC) minimises moisture risks, ensuring long-lasting performance in various applications, including timber frame, solid masonry, and steel-framed buildings.

Where to use

Roof Applications:

  • Pitched Roof Insulation (Between and Under Rafters):
Celotex PL4000 is ideal for loft conversions and upgrading existing pitched roof spaces. It can be installed between and under rafters, providing excellent thermal efficiency without compromising headroom, making it perfect for maximising energy retention in pitched roofs.
  • Flat Roof Insulation (Balconies and Terraces):
When insulating flat roofs under balconies or terraces, PL4000 offers both insulation and a plasterboard finish, creating a warm roof construction that prevents heat loss through the roof deck, ensuring superior thermal performance.
  • Flat Roof Insulation (Between and Under Joists):
Celotex PL4000 can be installed between and under joists in flat roofs, optimising insulation while maintaining a neat interior finish. Its combination of PIR insulation and plasterboard makes for a compact and easy-to-install solution, saving time and space.

Wall Applications:

  • External Wall Insulation (Cavity Walls):
Celotex PL4000 enhances thermal performance in cavity wall upgrades without taking up much interior space. It’s ideal for refurbishment projects where maintaining room size is crucial, providing effective insulation in a slim profile.
  • External Wall Insulation (Timber Frame Walls):
In timber-framed constructions, PL4000 acts as a high-performance insulation layer. It’s fixed to the internal face of timber frame walls, offering both thermal insulation and a plasterboard finish, reducing build time and complexity.
  • External Wall Insulation (Solid Walls):
Celotex PL4000 provides an internal insulation solution for solid walls, applied directly to the internal face. This product delivers both thermal insulation and a plaster-ready finish, making it ideal for retrofitting older properties and improving energy efficiency in solid wall constructions.

Frequently asked questions

What are the primary applications of Celotex PL4000 insulation?

Celotex PL4000 insulation is primarily used in partial-fill cavity wall constructions in both residential and commercial buildings. It is installed within the cavity to provide thermal insulation and improve the overall energy efficiency of the building envelope.

Is Celotex PL4000 insulation environmentally friendly?

Celotex PL4000 insulation contains blowing agents with a high global warming potential (GWP). While it provides excellent thermal performance, its environmental impact is a consideration. Celotex offers guidance on the responsible use and disposal of its products.

What are the dimensions and packaging of Celotex PL4000 insulation?

Celotex PL4000 insulation boards are available in various thicknesses and dimensions to suit different cavity widths and building requirements. They are typically supplied in rigid boards or panels for easy handling and installation.

How to fix Celotex insulated plasterboard?

To fix Celotex insulated plasterboard, you can either use the dot and dab method or mechanically fix it to battens or stud walls. For dot and dab, apply adhesive dabs across the wall and press the plasterboard into position. Ensure it's level and secure, then finish with plastering over it. If mechanically fixed, use appropriate screws for direct attachment to timber or metal studs, ensuring the board is securely fastened.

Do you need an air gap between insulation and plasterboard?

An air gap is not typically required between Celotex insulated plasterboard and the surface it is attached to. However, in specific applications such as roof installations, maintaining an air gap may be needed to prevent condensation. It’s always best to follow specific project guidelines and manufacturer recommendations.

Should Celotex joints be taped?

Yes, Celotex joints should be taped. This ensures an airtight seal and maximises thermal performance. Use foil tape to cover the joints between boards, which will help prevent heat loss and protect the insulation from moisture ingress.

Does the insulated plasterboard need a vapour barrier?

Celotex insulated plasterboard often comes with a built-in vapour control layer (VCL), eliminating the need for an additional vapour barrier in most cases. However, if the product does not have a VCL or if it's used in particularly damp environments, adding a separate vapour barrier may be advisable to protect the insulation from moisture.

Can you dot and dab Celotex insulated plasterboard?

Yes, you can dot and dab Celotex insulated plasterboard directly onto a solid wall. This is a common installation method. Make sure the wall is clean, dry, and free of any debris or dust before applying the adhesive. Once the board is in place, it should be finished with plastering to create a smooth surface.

Should insulated plasterboard touch the floor?

Insulated plasterboard should not touch the floor directly. It’s recommended to leave a small gap (around 10mm) between the plasterboard and the floor to prevent moisture from wicking up from the floor, which could cause dampness in the boards. This gap can be filled with sealant or covered with skirting.

What thickness of insulated plasterboard should I use?

The thickness of Celotex PL4000 insulated plasterboard you choose should be based on your project's specific insulation needs, budget, and the required U-value to meet Building Regulations. The available thicknesses include:

  • 37.5mm: Ideal for projects with limited space or where basic insulation is required.
  • 52.5mm: A common choice offering a balance between space efficiency and insulation performance.
  • 62.5mm: Suitable for applications requiring higher thermal performance, such as lofts or external walls.
  • 72.5mm: The thickest option, delivering maximum insulation, often used in areas with significant heat loss.

In general, thicker insulation boards provide greater energy savings. For example, using 72.5mm of insulation will reduce energy bills more than the thinner boards like 50mm. Always ensure your chosen thickness meets the relevant building standards for your specific application, whether it's for external walls, cavity walls, or internal walls

Can dampness get through the insulated plasterboard?

While Celotex insulated plasterboard is moisture-resistant, it is not completely waterproof. In areas prone to high humidity or poor ventilation, additional damp-proofing measures may be necessary. Products in the PL4000 range typically include a built-in vapour control layer (VCL), which acts as a barrier to help prevent moisture from penetrating the plasterboard. However, in cases of excessive dampness, extra precautions, such as external damp-proof membranes or water-resistant coatings, should be considered to maintain the board’s thermal performance and prevent damage.

Why should I use insulated plasterboard on a ceiling?

Using insulated plasterboard on a ceiling offers numerous benefits, making it a practical choice for enhancing both energy efficiency and comfort in a room. It significantly reduces heat loss by acting as a thermal barrier, which can lower energy bills and keep the room warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The product's combination of insulation and plasterboard in one simplifies installation, saving both time and costs by reducing the need for separate materials. Additionally, it improves soundproofing, minimising noise transfer between floors. This makes it particularly useful in spaces like loft conversions or rooms under unheated areas. With easy installation and space-saving properties, an insulated plasterboard is an efficient solution for improving thermal and acoustic performance in any room.
